DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WEB SERVER AND APPLICATION SERVER

Server

A server is a software or hardware device that responds to requests made over a network. Servers are used to manage network resources. For example, a Website Design Company in Bangalore can set up a server to restrict access to a network, send / receive emails, manage print jobs or host a website.

Web server

  • It is a computer program that accepts requests for data and sends specific documents.
  • A web server may be a system where online content is placed. The web server is designed to serve HTTP content.
  • It can serve other protocol support such as RMI / RPC
  • Creating a response by interacting with the database using the script.
  • Sends the file to the client associated with the requested URL
  • The server-side program usually provides functions such as transaction processing, database connection, and messaging.

Application server

  • This includes the Web Container and the EJP Container.
  • Application servers streamline the run environment for enterprise applications.
  • An application server is a term sometimes mixed with a web server. When a Web server handles mainly HTTP protocols, the application server handles various protocols, including but not limited to HTTP.
  • It provides middle ware services for state maintenance and security with stability and data access. It is a type of server designed to install, run and host related services and applications for IT services, end users and enterprises.
  • Just like a web server, an application server can use various scaling and fault-tolerance techniques.
